Finding Purpose, Balance, and Healing Beyond the Uniform

A Different Perspective on Life, Death, and the Power of Human Connection

Most of us have heard of a birth doula, someone who provides emotional, physical, and practical support during childbirth. But have you ever heard of a death doula?

When I first met Chris Eaton, I was skeptical. However, as our conversation unfolded, I discovered a man whose perspective on life, death, and the human experience challenged conventional thinking.

Chris believes that understanding how we live is just as important as understanding how we die. His approach centers on personal growth, mindfulness, and the connection between the body, mind, and spirit.

One statement during our interview particularly resonated with me: “Complacency kills.”

For those of us who have served in uniform, those two words carry significant weight. In the military, complacency can have devastating consequences. But Chris applies this philosophy beyond the battlefield. He believes complacency can prevent us from growing, healing, and discovering our true potential.

Chris is partnered with Operation Warrior Resolution, an organization dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of veterans and their families.

Since 2018, Operation Warrior Resolution has provided innovative, holistic mental health services to veterans at no cost. Its programs include brain-based approaches to addressing trauma, holistic veteran retreats, combat-conscious yoga, and family support.

The organization’s mission extends beyond simply addressing symptoms. It seeks to empower veterans to rediscover balance, purpose, and connection as they navigate life beyond military service.

This philosophy aligns closely with Chris’s personal approach to wellness.

Chris describes the human experience through what he calls the “wheel of life,” built upon three essential elements: body, mind, and spirit.

When these elements fall out of balance, our mental, emotional, and physical well-being can suffer.

For Chris, achieving balance is not a destination. It is an ongoing commitment to self-awareness, education, meditation, and meaningful experiences.

He emphasizes the importance of looking beyond ourselves, recognizing that personal growth is often discovered through our relationships, service to others, and willingness to explore unfamiliar perspectives.

His philosophy challenges us to consider an important question: Are we truly living with purpose, or are we simply going through the motions?

For veterans and first responders, the transition from a life defined by mission, structure, and service can create unexpected challenges. The uniform may come off, but the need for purpose, connection, and belonging remains.

Chris’s work offers another perspective on navigating those transitions.

As a death doula, his role introduces conversations many people hesitate to explore, to include mortality, acceptance, meaning, and the importance of living intentionally. Rather than viewing death solely through the lens of loss, his approach encourages reflection on life’s value.

Perhaps the greatest lesson from my conversation with Chris is that healing is not simply about overcoming the past. It is about learning how to live fully in the present.

And sometimes, the most meaningful growth begins when we become willing to challenge what we thought we knew.

Complacency doesn’t just limit our potential. It can prevent us from discovering the life we were meant to live.
