Through Mental Health Care and Small But Mighty Heroes, Tina Downing Serves Individuals and Families Facing Life’s Toughest Challenges
What began as a devastating personal loss has become a lifelong mission to help others find hope, healing, and resilience.
Tina Downing, founder of Small But Mighty Heroes and a passionate advocate for mental health awareness, has dedicated her life to serving individuals and families navigating trauma, grief, and life-altering challenges after losing her twin sister in 2021.
That loss became a catalyst for action.
Today, Tina devotes her time to two causes deeply rooted in her personal experiences: advancing access to innovative mental health treatment options and supporting children and families impacted by pediatric cancer.
Through her work with eTMS Florida, Tina combines patient care, community outreach, and mental health advocacy while working directly with individuals receiving EEG-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Having participated in hundreds of treatments, she has witnessed firsthand the impact innovative brain-based therapies can have on individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, traumatic brain injury, sleep disorders, substance use disorders, and other neurological and mental health challenges.
For Tina, the work extends beyond technology. It is about helping people rediscover hope, regain function, and improve their quality of life during some of their most difficult moments.
“My sister’s story became my purpose,” said Tina. “I never want someone to feel like they’re out of options. Hope matters and access to support matters.”
Originally pursuing a career as a trauma surgeon, Tina ultimately found a different path to helping others heal—one focused on supporting emotional and mental well-being through innovative therapies, advocacy, education, and compassionate service.
That same commitment to helping others inspired the creation of Small But Mighty Heroes, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children impacted by pediatric cancer, along with their siblings and parents.
Founded in 2017, Small But Mighty Heroes was born from Tina’s experiences supporting children and families facing unimaginable diagnoses and witnessing the emotional, financial, and mental health burdens that often accompany childhood cancer. Since its inception, the organization has supported hundreds of children and families through personalized Hero Boxes, Sidekick Boxes for siblings, family assistance initiatives, bereavement support, and trauma-informed programs designed to foster healing and resilience.
The organization’s mission is to provide trauma-informed emotional and mental health support to children impacted by pediatric cancer, their siblings, and parents, fostering healing, resilience, and hope through diagnosis, treatment, and loss.
“Behind every diagnosis is a child who deserves to be seen, supported, and loved,” Tina said. “Our goal is to ensure that no child or family walks that journey alone.”
Whether helping patients pursue innovative mental health treatments or standing beside families facing pediatric cancer, Tina’s mission remains the same: helping people find hope amid hardship and reminding them that they do not have to face life’s battles alone.
